HISTORY OF HERNANDO COUNTY
Post Offices
This page was formerly part of a web site maintained by Jeff Cannon which is no longer available. He has allowed me to add the page to the fivay.org web site. The information was compiled by author and historian Jeff Cannon from U.S. Postal Service microfilm records at the National Archives. The more recent dates of appointments were taken from the U.S. Postal Service website. Some early post offices established in Hernando County were within Citrus County when that county was established in 1887. These included Stage Pond, Hernando, Tompkinsville (Inverness), Lecanto, Floral City, Mannfield, Viana, Rosehill, Oakdale, Orleans, Fairmont, Arlington, and Citronelle. Most Citrus County offices are not included here, except those established prior to the Civil War. Other early post offices established in Hernando County were within Pasco County when that county was established, also in 1887. Those post offices are listed separately on the Pasco post offices page. Hernando County was known as Benton County from 1844 to 1850. |
