SYLVIA MILLER YOUNG

From her obituary …

Sylvia Miller Young, 83, a lifelong resident of her beloved Darby, Florida, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2022. Born on June 20, 1938, Sylvia resided within eyesight of her birthplace of Darby, Florida, to J.D. Miller and Hattie Bellamy Miller. The daughter of a farming family, Sylvia grew up with hard-working ethics, dedication and love of family, and pride in her heritage.

Known as an impeccably dressed and beautiful woman with a feisty, outgoing, quick witted and determined personality, as noted by a close family friend and relative, Howard Bellamy, Sylvia served as one of Pasco County’s first female County Commisioners for the extended period of 20 years. The restoration of the Pasco County Courthouse in Dade City, Florida, was notably one of Sylvia’s proudest accomplishments. In addition to the restoration project, Sylvia was hugely responsible for acquiring the antique furnishings used inside of the refurbished courthouse. Due to Sylvia’s efforts the Pasco County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. A plaque resides at the north entrance of the courthouse in memorium to Sylvia’s efforts and determination in getting this project completed.

Her passion and love for Pasco County led her to serve on the Pasco County Fair Board for 40 years, making sure her beloved community of Darby was always well represented in the community booth displays.

Inspired by the love of her heritage, Sylvia also served an active member of the Pioneer Florida Museum for many years. Sylvia wanted to be sure that the “old Florida” history, along with hers, was forever preseved.

Due to her family connection, Sylvia loved all things Bellamy, and for that, she was the driving force in the renaming of Bellamy Brothers Boulevard in eastern Pasco County, notably, running directly in front of her family home.

Sylvia was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dade City, Florida, and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

During her retirement years, Sylvia loved to frequent the Seminole Hardrock Casino where it’s reported she was known by name by many of the employees. Slots were her thing but never did she partake of any alcohol for that was “the devil’s way!”

Sylvia was first and foremost a mother. She adored her family, and her most precious “Mr. T.,” her tiny canine companion of 15 years.

Sylvia leaves behind her son, H.C. Young (Trish), a daughter, Mary (Mud) Lane, three grandchildren, Clint Young, Whitney Willis and Dakota Young, along with several great grandchildren.

A “Gathering of Friends” will take place June 16, 2022 from 6-8 PM at the Dan Cannon Auditorium, 36722 SR 52, in Dade City, Florida. A private burial will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sylvia’s name to either the Pasco County Fair Association, 36722 SR 5, Dade City, FL 33525 or the Pioneer Florida Museum, 15602 Pioneer Museum Rd, Dade City, FL 33523.
