GAMEL, CHRISTOPHER, born June 4, 1971; passed away November 30, 2017. Chris had a Masters of Arts in European History with honors; his thesis being the Glencoe Massacre And How It Forged A Nation. Chris had a Bachelors of Arts in the College of Education from the University of South Florida. Chris was a history teacher, his first year at Wesley Chapel and the following 16 years at JW Mitchell in New Port Richey, Florida. Chris was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Gamel and father William Gamel. Chris is survived by his sister, Natalie Heaton and many extended family members of aunts, uncles and cousins. Chris’ interests include medieval re-enactment as a member of the SCA, (Society of Creative Anachronism), riding his motorcycle and tracing his Scot-Irish lineage and visiting Scotland. Tony was born to Ashton Edwin Garner, Sr. and Betty Jordan Garner on February 22, 1956, in Clearwater, Fl. He married Joyce Ellen Thrash. Tony proudly served his country as part of the Military Police in the United States Army. He currently worked for the Pickens County Sheriff’s Department. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Garner, Ball Ground; sister, Susan Garner Reynolds; brothers, William and John Garner; and nephews, Franklin and Andrew Garner, Eric and Ashton Reynolds and Tyler Garner. GAUTHIER, RENE ANDRE “ANDRE”, 77, of Port Richey passed away on Sept. 11, 2013 while on vacation in Iron Mountain, MI. A graduate of Gulf High School in 1955, he was captain of the football and baseball teams, as well as student body president. He was a self employed Plumbing and Electrical Contractor and eventually went to work as a Building Inspector for Pasco County from where he retired in 1998. Andre served as an auxiliary policeman and volunteer fireman for the city of New Port Richey. He was a set builder for Stage West Community Theatre. He was an active member of The Elks, the Fraternal order of Eagles, and the Loyal Order of Moose. He loved golf and was a member of the “Happy Hackers” golf league at Meadow Oaks Country Club. He served on the Board of Directors of the Timber Oaks Community. He is survived by 3 daughters, Renee Gauthier, Michelle Hageman, and Lycia Sanchez; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandsons; 2 brothers, Joseph Gauthier & Raymond Gauthier; 1 sister, Ninette Waizenhofer; and companion, Lola Jacobs. GAWLE, MARCIN, 21, of Port Richey, died Sunday (May 11, 2003) in Hillsborough County. He came here nine years ago from his native Debica, Poland. He was a cook for Plaka restaurant in Tarpon Springs. He was Roman Catholic and a member of Mercy of God Polish Mission. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Jadwiga and Joseph Zawadzki, both of Port Richey; two brothers, Piotr, St. Petersburg, and Aleksander, New Port Richey; and his grandmother, Janina Maron, Debica. GEORGE, DIANE (DEE DEE), 34, of 1803 Mulberry St., Tampa, died Friday (Jan. 9, 1987). Born in St. Petersburg, She was a bartender and a 1970 graduate of Gulf High School. GESCHKE, KATHLEEN “KATY,” 49, of New Port Richey, passed away on Friday Sept. 13, 2013. She is survived by her son, Joe Geschke and his fiancée, Angel Healy; mother, Joan Geschke; brothers, Chris (Sue) and Mike (Cheryl) Geschke; niece, Laura; nephew, Brian; two cats, Rudy and Jake; and many friends. GIBSON, CHARLES W. “CHUCK.” 1943-2021. On Wednesday, May 12, 2021, Charles – lovingly known as Chuck, Chucky, Charlie or Chas – passed into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father and onto his next greatest adventure. Family always came first and Chuck was a devoted husband of 56 years to Joanne. They met when he was stationed at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. He served our country with great pride 1961-1965. They shared many adventures together and loved their yearly roadtrips to Nebraska. They have two children – Randy (Gina) and Missy (Scott). There are four grandchildren – Lainie, Ryan, Tobin and Amanda. They were his most beloved treasures. He was their number one fan whether it was volleyball, motocross, cross country, or dance recitals. When he wasn’t holding a bleacher down, wrenching on a bike at Dade City Race track or standing in a field watching kids run by, he was building remote controlled airplanes. He truly lived life to the fullest and never let a moment sit idle. Now he takes his place in Heaven with family and friends who have passed before him, to wait patiently for us to reunite. Give Blue and Maisey a kiss for us, Dad.

GILGER, MARY E, age 92. Born, Feb. 4, 1920; died, Oct. 24, 2012, at home. She was a native of Clarion County in western Pennsylvania. During WWII she worked at Owens-Illinois glass plant Clarion and and CPT Franklin Pa. She moved to New Port Richey in July 1960. She retired from the Pasco School District in 1986. She is survived by brother, Ron Busch, Bellville, Illinois; daughter, Kathryn L. Dow, New Port Richey; and 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. GILMORE, HARLEY COOPER, 85, of Ruskin, Florida. On Saturday, December 7, 2019, Harley Cooper Gilmore, loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and longtime licensed Land Surveyor, passed away at the age of 85 of natural causes. Harley was born on August 20, 1934 in Rutland, Vermont to Cora Belle (Cooper) and Carlton A. Gilmore. The young family moved to Elfers, Florida, when Harley was a child. Carlton passed away when Harley was just 11 years old and Cora went back to school to become a teacher. After high school, Harley joined the Air Force and served from 1954-1956 and trained to be a navigator. Harley returned to Florida and enrolled in the University of Florida where he graduated with his Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree in 1962. In August 1964, Harley married Ada Louise Smith. They raised two children Kim and Doug. Harley was a proud land surveyor and Director of Education at PDHPro.com and was a state licensed land surveyor until his passing. He also loved to cook, study history, write books, be involved in local charities such as the Boy Scouts and the Hillsborough River State Park Historical Society. He was a businessman, columnist, teacher, theologian, expert witness and all around friend to all. Harley loved his children, his six grandchildren his two great-grandsons and enjoyed attending their activities and attending family gatherings. He was known as the “pie-man” and would bring his signature Apple Pie with Bacon, Pumpkin and Pecan pies to events. Harley is survived by his children Kim (Jeffrey) Miller, Doug (Marie) Gilmore, his grandchildren Cross, Troy & Rhett Gilmore, Josh (Megan) & Rachel Lacy & Faith Miller and great-grandsons Colby & Carson Lacy. GIUNTA, JOSEPH JOHN “JOE,” 21, passed away on Jan. 8, 2011. Joe was a 2007 graduate of Gulf High School & served in the U.S. Army until October 2010. Joe was a loving son & brother that left us too soon. He is survived by his parents, Johnny & Sherry; brother, Jacob; grandparents, Nellie Giunta, Bill & Lynne Robey; many aunts, uncles, cousins and a large circle of family and friends. GLAVICH, JACK “POPSIE,” 85, of Dade City, died Tuesday (May 4, 2004) at home. Born in Chadburn, N.C., he came to Florida in 1922. He was a 1939 graduate of Gulf High School. He was a Navy veteran serving on Liberty Ships as an armed guard during World War II in the European Theatre. He was a retired master fitter with Plant City Steel. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dade City. He served as both deacon and Sunday school teacher. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lillie; two sons, James and Steve, both of Dade City; two daughters, Sheila Stahl, Augusta, Ga., and Sharon Scheffer, Brooksville; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. GOLEBIEWSKI, DANIEL, 52, of New Port Richey, died Thursday (April 3, 2003) at Hernando-Pasco Hospice, New Port Richey. He came here 35 years ago from his native Michigan City, Ind. He was a roofing business construction worker and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a basketball player for Gulf High School. GOMILLION, LYNDA (KOLEAN), 66, of Brooksville, Florida was called home Monday, September 29, 2020. Born in Tarpon Springs, Florida to Robert and Maxine Kolean, Lynda was a strong follower of Christ Jesus and will be deeply missed by her loving family and friends. She is survived by her mother (Maxine Kolean) ; her loving husband Wayne E. Gomillion; son Anthony W. Gomillion (Julie); daughter Vanessa Ann Gomillion; sister Barbara White (Ray); brothers Tom Kolean (Terrie), Dennis Kolean and granddaughter, Hayli Gomillion. Lynda’s final days were tranquil and spent surrounded by family and friends that she touched in some small way throughout her short and memorable life. Lynda was an active and compassionate person who loved traveling to new places and meeting new friends. She was athletic and enjoyed downhill skiing and excelled in bowling, tennis and pickle ball and had a soft heart for animals. Over the years Lynda made significant contributions in her personal and professional relationships, by being supportive, loyal and encouraging. She was the love of my life and I’ve been truly blessed to enjoy so many heart felt memories and wonderful years of her devoted and loving companionship. Lynda recently retired from Moore County Schools, where she was affectionately known as Millie. A member of Christ Community Church in Pinehurst, NC, Lynda was quick to share her faith the Good News of the Gospel as found in John 3:16. While Lynda’s life may seem too short to many, those who were touched by her understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which we live. Her smile and gentle ways put people at ease and brought much joy to those that knew her. We love you, we miss you sweetie and look forward to reuniting with you in Heaven.

GOOD, PAUL B. In St. Petersburg, Mr. Good was a driving force behind Kids and Kubs, the Harlem Globetrotters of senior softball. He was the longest serving president in club history. And he may be best remembered for taking his aging, ageless team to Midwestern locales where visions of Florida still include old coots on ball fields, swinging for the fences. Mr. Good died Nov. 16, 2008. He was 98. [This is believed to be the Paul Good who graduated from GHS in 1928.]

GOODMAN, ROSCOE L., 56, of Tarpon Springs, formerly of Hudson, died Monday (March 6, 1995). He was born in Hudson and was a senior analyst for GTE, Tampa. GORDON, RONALD, USAF, 77, of Holiday, FL, passed away on April 8, 2019. Ron graduated from Gulf High School where he played football. He proudly served in the US Air Force and was a pilot. GREEN, ANNE WHITTENHALL, 75, of Hudson, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Nov. 25, 2009. She passed peacefully with her family by her side at HPH Marliere Care Center. Born in Tarpon Springs on Feb. 25, 1934, she was a 1951 graduate of Gulf High School. She was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend to all that knew her. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Thomas B. GREENE, ANTHONY. A teenage bicyclist 20 miles from home was hit on a dark Odessa road by an 18-year-old driver who tried to swerve, but was too late, sheriff’s deputies said. Anthony Greene, 16, died at the scene Monday night. On Tuesday, grief counselors visited his school, Middleton High, and family gathered at Greene’s home in East Tampa. His younger brother played outside with Duke, a pitbull terrier, while older family members grieved inside. Related News/Archive According to deputies, Greene was riding a black bicycle south on Gunn Highway about 8:30 p.m., headed home after spending time with a friend. A 2002 Dodge truck approached from behind near Jana Drive, traveling about 45 mph. The driver, 18-year-old Christopher Griffith, saw the bike and tried to veer out of the way but ended up hitting it, deputies said. Greene was thrown off the bike. He was not wearing a helmet, deputies said. His bicycle did not have lights. Sheriff’s officials noted that the accident happened in an area where there is no bike lane or paved shoulder. That particular stretch of Gunn Highway is narrow, as the road curves around Lake Calm. Griffith of Carrollwood was not charged or cited in Monday’s crash. In May, he was cited with careless driving for a different crash with property damage, state records show. He cut off a car as he made a right turn on red, a sheriff’s report states. Deputies said Griffith appeared “devastated” at the scene of the crash. Griffith’s father, also named Chris, picked up the phone at the family’s home Tuesday morning. He said his son was upset and told a reporter, “We’re very sympathetic to the young man’s parents.” When asked about the crash, the father said, “That’s really all we’re going to say at this point.” Greene’s death is the first bicycle fatality in Hillsborough this year. GREEN-FOOTE, DEBORA, 53, of New Port Richey, died Oct. 8, 2010, at home. A native of Beacon, NY, she had lived here for 27 years. She was an English teacher at Gulf High School, New Port Richey and an avid reader and member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Survivors include sons, Alex & Michael; daughter, April Greer (Jeff); her mother, Patricia Green; brother Joseph Green (Donna); she was “Uma” to grandchildren, Jayson, Ty & Chloe; nephews, Shane and Chase and loving family. GREY, BILL, 53, died Sunday night, January 29 [1978], of an apparent heart attack at this home in the Hillandale subdivision outside of New Port Richey. Mr. Grey was at one time Mayor of New Port Richey from December 1969 to December 1971, and as his platform, spoke in favor of increased taxes and development of a plan to provide more freshwater to the city. Mr. Grey disturbed other politicians with his unorthodox behavior in an election year, concerning the increase in taxes, but he was always considered very outspoken and open with his beliefs. A funeral mass will be held for Mr. Grey today at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church with the Reverend. Aiden Foynes and the Reverend Donald Baiser the Celebrants. Mr. Grey was the son of a pioneer family, and was reared in the New Port Richey area. Prominent in civic affairs, Mr. Grey served as a councilman on the Port Richey city council before becoming Mayor of New Port Richey. Mr. Grey was divorced from his wife several years, but lived in Hillandale with his son Willie. Bill Grey and his brother Jim were two of the area’s first real estate developers with the subdivisions Golden Acres, Citrus Terrace, Pine Acres, Sunshine Ranches, and Tropic Shores. Only in recent years had Mr. Grey worked in the development of Hillandale and an extension of Golden Acres. Mr. Grey graduated from Gulf High School, was a Navy Veteran of WWII, a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Suncoast Aeria 3153, Moose Lodge, 1747 and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chester McKay Post 7987. He was a vice-president of Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens, director of Ellis First National Bank, director of Swartsel Builders Inc., past president of the Pasco Board of Realtors, past president of the West Pasco Little League and a former trustee at West Pasco Hospital. Mr. Grey is survived by his son, William M., New Port Richey; three daughters, Carol Glaves and Casey Grey, both of New Port Richey and Susan Grey of Atlanta; a brother James E. and a grandson, Troy Glaves, both of New Port Richey. GRIMES, ANDY. Andy Grimes was born without legs, but that didn’t stop him from dreaming about playing football. In his 17 years, the youth managed to show courage while facing misfortune. In 1985, he followed his dream and tried out for the Gulf High junior varsity football team. On Wednesday, while fishing with his grandfather and uncle in a boat off Anclote Point, Andy was struck by lightning. He died several hours later at a hospital. The teen-ager, who dropped out of Gulf High School last year, was hit as the three fishermen brought their 14-foot skiff in around Anclote Point to avoid the coming rain. Andy loved to fish – even if it was often a bit of an ordeal being lifted into and out of the boat. On Wednesday, the fish weren’t biting, and an angry storm cloud suddenly moved overhead. As the Rev. L.A. Grimes, a 54-year-old Holiday resident, pulled his church van around to the boat ramp to pick up his grandson, who was not using his wheelchair or artificial legs, a bolt of lighting struck the young man. It was a sudden, bizarre end to the life of the young man, an aspiring football player who, his family now says, knew in his heart that without legs, he didn’t have much of a chance. But the mourning family was still mostly confounded by the odd nature of the tragedy. “The most freak thing I ever saw,” the Rev. Grimes said Friday. The lightning shock rendered the teen-ager unconscious. The pastor, with the help of his son-in-law, Jim Barbee, 38, and some passers-by, loaded Andy into the van, and sped to Tarpon Springs General Hospital. The youth was revived briefly after entering the emergency room, but he died hours later in the intensive care unit from a cardiac arrest. According to the report from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, the lightning emerged from the youth’s upper left thigh. “It would have been a miracle if he’d lived, and the doctors said he’d have been a vegetable if he had,” said the Rev. Grimes, pastor of the Trinity Fellowship Church in Holiday. Family members recalled Andy as a cheerful young man whom people loved to be with, someone who adjusted well to several moves, first from his native Alabama in 1983, then from Tarpon Springs to New Port Richey 18 months later. They also said that peers admired his courage in trying to overcome his handicap, and that he was especially popular on Friday nights at a New Port Richey ice-skating rink. But the family also revealed a solitary and sullen side of the teen-ager. The youth dropped out of Gulf High just over a year ago, depressed over his failure to make the football team, his mother, Linda Grimes, said. They let him practice, but told him he couldn’t join the team because of his grades, she said. It was a particularly severe blow, his grandfather said, because Andy had attracted wide attention in local newspapers for his attempts to join the team. In an interview with the St. Petersburg Times in May 1985, Andy’s father, Eldon Grimes, said he was disappointed when his son was born that he might not grow up to be a football player. Since leaving school, Linda Grimes said, her son mostly stayed around the house, went fishing and talked occasionally about finding a job. “He wanted to work badly, but couldn’t find anything he could do, without any legs and all,” she said. The pastor said Andy had spoken with him about eventually taking a high-school equivalency exam, and studying to be a computer programmer. “It’s so unfair,” his mother said. “I can hardly believe it. GROSSMAN, MARTIN, was executed at Florida State Prison on Feb. 17, 2010. He convicted of killing Margaret Park, a Florida Wildlife Officer on the night of Dec. 13, 1984. Before his excecution, he read the following statement to the media: “I would like to extend my heartfelt remorse to the victim’s family. I fully regret everything that occurred that night, for everything that was done, whether I remember everything or not. I accept responsibility.” Grossman was born on Jan. 19, 1965, on a military base near San Antonio, Texas. When he was six months old he moved with his family to Hialeah, Florida, and in 1978 he moved to New Port Richey with his family. He attended Gulf High School sporadically in the 9th and perhaps 10th grades.

HAND, DANNY, 42, of New Port Richey, died Nov. 27, 2016. According to investigators, 42-year-old Danny Hand, a tow truck operator for Crockett’s Towing, was assisting a disabled motorist when he was struck by an oncoming Toyota Camry. Hand’s tow truck had its lights activated and was parked on the shoulder. The driver of the Toyota Camry was charged with DUI manslaughter. Danny attended Gulf High School and Pinellas Park High School. He was in the GHS Class of 1994.

HARTSFIELD, JAMES MATTHEW, “MATT,” 21, of New Port Richey, died Friday (Nov. 21, 1997) as the result of an automobile accident. Born in Atlanta, he came here 13 years ago from Mobile, Ala. HATCHER, STEVEN, 16, was killed on May 4, 1996, when the car he was driving veered off Strauber Memorial Highway just south of Moog Road and crashed into a pole. Two other boys in the car were seriously injured.

HAWKINS, REX. E. b., Sep. 28, 1921, Annis, Idaho; d., Nov. 26, 2009, Logan, Utah. Rex E. Hawkins chose Nov. 26, 2009, Thanksgiving Day, as his day of transition from this life to the next. He died at the Sunshine Terrace, surrounded by family members. Rex was born to Earl and Chloe Hawkins on Sept. 28, 1921, in Annis, Idaho. He was raised in Nephi, Utah. He was the oldest of 3 children. He has one sister, Elaine Garrett, of Kaysville and a brother, Max of Redmond. He worked hard for his parents with a family motel and on a small farm. He became an accomplished clarinet and tennis player during his high school years. During his growing up years, he enjoyed exploring the Nebo Wilderness Area and all the activities associated with the outdoors. After graduating from Juab High School, Rex attended Utah State University for 3 years. He enlisted in the United States Navy as an aviation cadet on Thanksgiving Day of 1942. He received his wings after dive-bombing training in Corpus Christi, Texas. Prior to being assigned to the Pacific Campaign, he married Lorraine Ricks from Benson, Utah, on March 10, 1944. Rex served in WWII as a bomber pilot. He participated in campaigns in Iwo Jima, Guam, Bonin Islands, and the Philippines. As a result of his actions, he received numerous medals. After returning to the U.S., Rex had a few quick tours along the eastern coast. In 1946, he was released to inactive duty in the Naval Reserve. Rex returned to USU for one quarter and was notified that he was accepted for Regular Navy. For the next 18 years, his Naval career included: landing signal officer for the Atlantic Fleet, instructor at a night fighter school in Key West, FL, attending general line school and being in the Operations Department as a training officer in Monterrey, CA, becoming a helicopter pilot in Pensacola, FL, serving aboard the USS Macon, Rushmore, Edisto, and Neptune out of Lakehurst, NJ, serving as executive officer of the Fleet Aircraft Squadron 101 in Quonset Point, RI, flying helicopters for the Mine Defense Lab in Panama City, FL, and finally being the Operations Officer in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. His wife, Lorraine and children were evacuated to the US at this time. Rex retired from the Navy in 1964. He returned to USU to earn a degree in Education. He then went to Indiana University and received a masters degree in AV Communications. Rex was called back into the Navy and was assigned to Kingsville, TX. He retired again in 1969 and for the next 20 years taught NJROTC, 10 years in New Orleans, LA and 10 years in New Port Richie, FL. as the Officer in Charge. In Dec. 1989, Rex and Lorraine moved to Cape Coral, FL., to be close to their son and a daughter. They were there for 17 years. Lorraine passed away on April 13,2006. Following the death of Lorraine, Rex moved to Logan to be closer to his daughter, Vicki. They have shared 3 wonderful years together. In May, 2007, Rex was reunited with his high school sweetheart, Ilene Pack. They enjoyed a 2 ½ year friendship before her passing on Sept. 5, 2009. Rex loved animals, especially dogs and cats. He and Lorraine took in and provided love for scores of animals. Over the years, Rex enjoyed tinkering with cars, riding motorcycles, river rafting, deep-sea fishing, boating, camping, and playing golf. He came to Utah almost every summer to visit his parents and to enjoy his beloved Nephi Canyon. Rex is survived by his 3 children: Vicki (Peter) Olson of North Logan, Lora Montgomery of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Gary (Cindy) Hawkins of Ft. Myers, FL., 7 grandchildren: Michael, Richard, Brian, Brandon, Ashley, Jason, and Jesse, and 7 great-grandchildren: Alexis, Alyssa, Dakota, Hunter, Aleah, Aspen, and Logan. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center, Logan. We love you POP. You will be missed. HAYES, GREGORY, 47, died on May 30, 2011, from colon cancer. He was a 1982 graduate of Gulf High School. He is survived by his wife Angela, two daughters, Aimee Hayes, who graduated from Gulf High in 2006; and Leah Hayes, who graduated from Gulf High in 2010; a son Zachary; and a brother Steve. He was a quarterback for Gulf and a pitcher on the baseball team.

HAYSTRAND, JOHN A. JR., 44, of New Port Richey, died March 7, 2014 at Gulfside Hospice in New Port Richey. Survived by wife, Denise (Brown) Haystrand; 2 children, Amanda Haystrand and Justin Haystrand; granddaughter, Breanna; father, John Haystrand Sr.; mother, Delores (Cullam) Flaherty; and 3 sisters, Karen Calano, Darlene Lamm and Stacey Fell. John was born in Smithtown, NY and lived in Brentwood, NY until 1977, when the family relocated to New Port Richey. John attended Gulf High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1989. He served during the Gulf War and was honorably discharged in 1992. He then began his career as a Marble Mason for the Bricklayers International Union BAC Local #3 at Steward Mellon Company. He worked there for several years, then HSA Engineering and Scientists, and A-Plus Fireplaces, continuing his trade. With his father he opened his own business, J&J Granite and Marble, Inc. and in 2012, he retired and worked with his wife at A.F.I.R.E. of Pasco County, Inc. as the Transportation Coordinator, as well as being a member of the board, where he worked tirelessly to help the program grow and succeed. For many years, he coached youth football and baseball with the PPAL New Port Richey Buccaneers, Salvation Army Lions and the West Pasco Little League. John was an avid member of the River Ridge Royal Knights Athletic Booster Club and a Booster Member of the Peru State College Bobcat Booster Club, Peru, Nebraska. HENDRICK, TANNER “DIXIE” Tanner “Dixie” Hendrick III, 76, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 30, 2011, in Aiken, SC. A native of Nashville, TN, Mr. Hendrick was a son of the late Tanner Jr. and Nelle Bailes Hendrick. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a BS Degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked in a variety of positions and locations for the DuPont company headquartered in Wilmington, DE for over 40 years. Dixie and his late wife Gail lived in Aiken for 30 years and was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. Dixie loved the outdoors and had strong interests in hiking, golf, and fishing. He was a big sports fan and closely followed the SEC along with the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Braves. Survivors include two sons; Jeffrey Tanner (Catherine) Hendrick, Decatur GA, and Kendall Blake (Laura) Hendrick, Bald Head Island, NC and Tucson, AZ, a granddaughter Tanner Katelyn Hendrick, Decatur GA, a brother William Bailes (Sue) Hendrick, Chocowinity, NC. Tanner graduated from Gulf High School in the class of 1952. He was class president.

HENRICKSON, ERIC CARTER, 51, Fergus Falls, died suddenly on Friday, April 7, 2006, at his home. He was born April 2, 1955, in Minneapolis, the son of Everett and Nancy (Peterson) Henrickson. He was baptized at Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood and confirmed at King of Glory Lutheran Church in New Port Richey, Fla. He moved with his family to Florida in 1963, where he attended Rio Vista Elementary School in St. Petersburg and graduated in 1973 from Gulf High School in New Port Richey. Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country at Fort Riley, Kansas, achieving the rank of E-4 Specialist. During his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal as well as recognition as a Marksman. He was honorably discharged in 1975 and subsequently moved to Brainerd where he earned his Licensed Nurse Practitioner certificate and worked as a behavior analyst at the Brainerd State Hospital. He returned to Florida in 1978 and worked at Anclote Manor in Tarpon Springs until joining the staff of Peniel Christian School in Spring Valley, Wis., as a counselor and teacher in 1980. In 1981, he met Rene Newton of Toledo, Ore. They were married in 1983 and together settled in Fergus Falls, where he undertook religious and pastoral studies at the Lutheran Brethren Seminary. In 1985, he and his family moved to northern Florida where he worked in various sales and retail marketing ventures. His true calling in life was the ministry. In fact, his family motto was, “The Henricksons – Changing America one kid at a time.” From 1991 to 1997, he lived this motto in many ways, including returning to Peniel as its assistant director from 1991 to 1993, and again from 1995 to 1997; and assisting troubled teenagers at the Boys Ranch Texas from 1993 to 1995. In 1997, Eric and his family returned to Fergus Falls to complete his seminary studies. While in seminary he served as youth minister for Zion-Sarpsborg, Tordenskjold and Kvam churches in the Dalton area. He also earned his nursing assistant certificate and worked locally at Broen Memorial Home and Lake Region Hospital before taking on the responsibilities of foster parenting in 2004. Most recently, he earned his certification from the Stephen Ministry program in Christian care giving. Eric’s life was guided by his service to God, and the following passage inspired him in his daily work: “I have great worth apart from my performance because Christ gave His life for me, and therefore, imparted great value to me. I am deeply loved, fully pleasing, totally forgiven, accepted, and complete in Christ.” Eric was preceded in death by his mother Nancy Henrickson and his brother-in-law James Owen. HICKMAN, BENJAMIN LAMAR. AUSTIN, TX – Benjamin LaMar Hickman, 32, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2007. Benjamin was born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and grew up in Florida. HICKMAN, JACK, 50, died of throat cancer on Sept. 28, 2004. He was a barber, and ran his own barber shop, Jack’s Barber Shop, on U. S. 19 beginning in 1984. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Florida in 1967.

HICKS, ROBERT K., 55, of New Port Richey, died Saturday (April 13, 1991) at home. He came here in 1971 from his native Akron, Ohio. A graduate of the University of Akron, he taught Latin and humanities at Gulf High School. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include his mother, Edith Hicks, Holiday; and a brother, Charles, Akron. HIGGINS, CHARLOTTE MAE (SARMENT), GHS Class of 1935, died on April 25, 2020. She was the oldest living alum of Gulf High School. Her son Bertie Higgins, the noted singer and songwriter, posted this on his Facebook page:

Our beloved Mother, Charlotte Mae Higgins (Nana) passed away peacefully last night, April 25, 2020 at the Peninsula Rehabilitation Center in Tarpon Springs, FL. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 21 1916 and was only a few weeks away from her one hundred fourth birthday. As a young girl, her family moved from Boston to New Port Richey where she attended local schools. She married her husband Elbert Thomas Higgins (Jiggs) when she was only sixteen years old and remained with him for more than fifty years until his passing in 1986. They had seven children of only three still survive; Charlotte, Gloria and Bertie. She was employed by Tarpon Springs High School as the cafeteria manager for several years until her retirement. She was an amazing woman who was dearly loved by everyone she met because of an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. She is now survived by her aforementioned children and several grand children and great grandchildren. Because of the current crisis, the family is planning a celebration of life when the size of the crowd is no longer in effect and that, along with a Catholic mass will be held at the St. Ignatius Catholic church in Tarpon Springs with a gathering to follow. This will be announced at a later date. This celebration will be open to the public but her interment at Cycadia Cemetery this week in Tarpon Springs will be limited to family members only. Vinson Funeral Home in Tarpon Springs will be handling the arrangements. As per hers and the family’s desires, in lieu of sending flowers, we would prefer a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.

HIGGINS, STEPHEN M., 38, of Port Richey died on Dec. 7, 2013. He graduated from GHS in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Kim; son, Jonathon; and brother, Larry. His funeral will be held at Dobies Funeral Home on Congress St. Thursday (12/12) at 6 p.m. Steve was a son of Gulf High science teacher Larry Higgins.

HIGGS, BILL, Class of 1967. Bill was only at Gulf High for his last two years of school; his sister Fran relates in an e-mail that their parents moved a good bit. While at Gulf Bill was active with track and field under Coach Dave Powell. After a long and courageous battle with cancer Bill passed away in March of 2008 at The Villages where he had moved with his wife after living most of their adult life in Indiana.

HILGART, WALTER LEONARD “LEN,” age 94, New Port Richey, Florida, passed away on Oct. 30, 2016. Len was born on Oct. 5, 1922 on his father’s birthday in Park Falls, Wisconsin. He is the son of the late Isadore and Matilda (Neperil) Hilgart and stepson of Katherine (Brosnan) Hilgart. Len attended the Greenfield School for the first four years, and graduated from Fifield High School in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force on Dec. 12, 1942. He graduated from flying school, and went overseas to the Pacific as a P-38 Fighter Pilot. He flew 22 combat missions before the war ended, and flew over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. HITE, DENNIS JOSEPH, 16, of New Port Richey, died Friday (July 23, 1999) as the result of an automobile accident. He was born in Orlando and was a lifelong resident of New Port Richey. He was a senior and member of the ROTC at Gulf High School, a cashier for Seven Springs Winn-Dixie, an instructor and second-degree black belt at Ingram’s Professional Karate Center, New Port Richey, and a Baptist. Survivors include his parents, Damon and Cindy Hite, and a sister, Chelsie Hite, all of New Port Richey; and his paternal grandparents, Joe and Nell Hite, Fort Pierce. Thomas B. HOLLEY, RICH. To his longtime friends, Rich Holley was a passionate man who could do just about anything and already had done a lot.

He was a successful businessman, an avid boater and pilot and a nationally recognized leader in the jukebox and arcade-game industry. He also was a former math teacher, soccer coach and professional musician.

Holley was so meticulous that the tools, bolts and screws in the garage of his Palm Harbor home were as organized as those in a hardware store.

That’s why friends are puzzled as to what could have caused his single-engine 1969 Beechcraft Bonanza plane to crash this weekend.

“I’m sure that plane would have never left the ground if he had any doubts,” said Paul Virgadamo of New Port Richey, a former business partner who has known him for about 25 years.

Holley, 58, took off from the North Captiva Island airstrip about 3:30 p.m. Friday for a 15-minute flight to Fort Myers. He never made it. His body was found inside the wreckage of the small plane Saturday morning about a mile east of where it had departed.

The National Transportation Safety Board is looking into the crash. A federal investigator will go through the wreckage, which has been taken to an airport in Fort Lauderdale, and the medical examiner’s report to look for clues, said the agency’s Southeast regional director, Jeff Kennedy.

Friends describe Holley as the type of guy who recited lines from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at a reception in London, delighting anyone within earshot. He also was the type to play a prank on a fellow teacher by faking a love note and placing it in her school mailbox.

“He was truly a fascinating and passionate guy, and there was never any ambiguity about Rich,” said Jack Kelleher, executive vice president of the Chicago-based Amusement and Music Operators Association. “You always knew where he was coming from and where he was going. He lived life to the fullest.”

Holley was a member of that organization for more than 20 years and became its president last September. He was a driven leader and a staunch supporter of the coin-operated video and music equipment industry, Kelleher said.

Holley was named “Operator of the Year” by a trade publication in 2000. He also started an industry garage band called the Coin Drops, which made its debut at a Las Vegas trade show in September. He played the keyboard and guitar.

“When you would be at a meeting and there was an impasse, people would look to him for guidance,” Kelleher said. “And on a personal level, people enjoyed being around Rich Holley because you knew certainly that there was never a dull moment.”

Holley was born in Trinidad, where his father worked for an oil company. He moved to the United States after graduating from high school. He played in a band while attending Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, where he received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

He was drawn to Florida because of the water and moved there in 1975 with his wife, Bev, after he graduated from college. He worked for an electronics company that made copiers and converted microfiche into electronic images.

When the company tried to relocate him to Chicago, Holley and his wife decided to stay in Florida.

After trying his hand at other jobs, Holley taught math and coached soccer at Gulf High School in New Port Richey in the late 1970s. There, he met Virgadamo, who was the assistant principal at the school.

Both of them owned arcades in Pasco County and decided to join forces. They formed the Southeast Game Brokers, a risky venture that paid off. After classes let out for the day, both would take jukeboxes and arcade games to bowling lanes and truck stops.

“When he put his mind to something, it was going to be done,” Virgadamo said.

Virgadamo and Holley eventually went their separate ways professionally, with Virgadamo starting another company and Holley and his wife keeping Southeast Game Brokers. But they stayed friends and often spoke to each other a few times a day.

“We were like brothers,” Virgadamo said.

Holley was an instrument-rated pilot who loved to fly, Virgadamo said. He also loved to go boating and fishing and recently made a CD of himself playing songs.

“It sounded incredible,” Virgadamo said. “When I tell you he could do anything, he could do anything. There was no stopping him.”

Holley was fascinated by magic and could entertain and mystify others with card tricks and his ability to make things disappear, Kelleher said.

He also was a fan of technology, whether it was on his personal computer, his plane or musical instruments.

“In an industry that sometimes is a bit slow to embrace change, he was the champion of it,” Kelleher said.

HOLMES, JOAN HICKS

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Holmes, who passed away on January 26, 2023 at the age of 87. Born in Thomasville, GA on January 22, 1936, Joan lived a full and rich life, surrounded by family and friends. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Ruth Stringer Hicks and William H. Hicks, and her husband, Jackson Autry Holmes. Despite this loss, she cherished and loved her family deeply, including her son Michael Holmes (Caren) of Lighthouse Point, FL and daughter Jan Roberts (Marty) of The Villages, FL. She was also blessed with multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will always remember her as a kind, caring and loving grandmother. Throughout her life, Joan had a strong walk with our Lord Jesus Christ. It was that walk which guided her to live a deeply committed life of service and philanthropic activities including Metcalf Methodist Church, Plantation United Methodist Church, 1st United Methodist Women of Thomasville, Archbold Memorial Hospital (where she was named Volunteer of the Year), FSU Emeritus Board, Vashti (home for troubled youth), Kids Against Hunger (Feeding the Hungry Around the World), and Wesley Glen (a private, not for profit organization that supports adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in a Christian environment). A celebration of her life will be held on February 11, 2023 at 11:00 am at Metcalf United Methodist Church, 2009 Magnolia St, Metcalf, GA 31792, where her faith was nurtured and sustained throughout her life. A private graveside service at Springhill Methodist Church for immediate family will be held following the service. Joan will be deeply missed by all who knew her. HOOTEN, PAUL. TAMPA – Paul Brown Hooten, 26, of 326 W Delaware Ave., New Port Richey, was killed Monday night in an accident near the Hillsborough-Pasco County line on Dale Mabry Highway, north of Sun Lake Boulevard. The Florida Highway Patrol in Tampa said Hooten’s car was on the east shoulder of Dale Mabry Highway headed north. Hooten pulled onto the road, crossing the centerline and striking a car. The impact of the collision knocked Hooten’s car back onto the shoulder of the highway. According to investigating Troopers Jerry Baxter and Bobby Walker, Hooten got out of his car and was inspecting the right rear when he was struck by a semi-tractor trailer. The troopers said the truck driven by Cornell Jones, 48, of Ocala, was trying to avoid hitting the cars involved in the accident. No charges were filed. Hooten was born in Spartanburg, S.C., and moved to New Port Richey in 1951. He graduated from Lyman Ward Military Academy in Camp Hill, Ala. Hooten was employed as a plumber at Florida Central Plumbing. He is survived by his wife, Carol; two daughters, Denise and Patricia; his mother Inez Hooten, and a sister, Patricia Evans, all of New Port Richey. HOOVER, KATHERINE LYNN (BRYAN), 25, died of a gunshot wound on July 27, 2014. She attended Gulf High School.

HOPE, DUANE FOWLER, died July 21, 2008 in his home in Lake Worth. He was born June 21, 1924 in New Port Richey, Florida to Kenneth Edward and Gertrude Hope. Duane (Buck) Hope graduated from Gulf High School in 1942. He married Helen Colgan on April 11, 1947. Buck and Helen had a home in Lantana prior to moving to Lake Worth where they lived for more than 56 years. For 25 years, they were partners in Hope Construction, Inc. while raising four children. He was a member of the Civitan Club, sat on the board of the Lake Worth Utility Authority and was active in the Florida Wildlife Conservation Association and Ducks Unlimited. Buck was a life member of the Carpenters Union local 819. He was a Scholarship Partner with the University of Florida Athletic Association and an avid Gator Fan for more than 50 years. Buck was a good husband/ father and trusted friend. Mr. Hope was a member at the First Congregational Church in Lake Worth. Buck is survived by his daughter, Carol Whitefield; his son, Robert Hope and daughter-in-law, Louise; his daughters, Marilyn Hope and Janet Hope; seven grandchildren, Lara, Benjamin, his wife Lori, and Adam Whitefield, Tracey Blair and her husband Matt, Katie Dugger, Jacki and Robert Holroyd and four great- grandchildren, Caleb, Abigail, Joshua Blair and Kaya Whitefield. HOPE, KENNETH H. 68, of Weeki Wachee, formerly of New Port Richey, died Oct. 24th [2008]. He was born in Guatemala and moved to new Port Richey in 1950, from Lowell, MA. HOUSEND, JULIETTE D., 87, of Interlachen died Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at her residence. She was born in New Port Richey and had been a resident of Interlachen for the past 30 years, coming from Jacksonville. JONES, E. JAY “BUCK,” 52, passed away March 22, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family that he loved so dearly. He was the most kind hearted man who never met someone he couldn’t and wouldn’t befriend. He was a roofer by trade and was a hard worker. His purpose in life was to care for his dear mother. He stopped working to be her caretaker many years ago. He loved her more than life itself. KARGMAN, JUDITH ANN (BUDD), 73, of New Port Richey, passed April 9, 2019. An equestrian, librarian, and animal lover, she received a BA from USF, a MS from Catholic University of America, and served in the US Marine Corps. KAUTZ, JUANITA (NITA) PARKES, died on March 25, 2010. She was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on October 24, 1918. She is survived by her son James Richard Kautz III, wife Maria Greene, step grandson Tyler Turk, all of Marietta, Georgia, and Lawrence (Larry) John Kautz of St. Petersburg, Florida. Grandsons James Kautz IV, wife Christy, great grandchildren Evan, Connor, and Alyssa, all of Acworth, Georgia, grandson John Kautz and wife Terry Kobza of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and special friend Barbary Brooks of Dandridge. A private memorial service will be held. Nita and Jim joined Magna View Baptist Church in 1980. Nita had many hobbies. She and Jim raised shelties for over 20 years. Nita loved flowers and always had flowers. She enjoyed writing articles and letters. She enjoyed taking pictures, and read a great deal. Nita was active in church. She taught Sunday school from Cradle Roll to senior adults. She was church clerk and publicity chairman. Nita enjoyed singing, both solos and in the choir. KEHOE, DENNIS M. age 69, recently of Rockwall, TX, previously of Tallahassee, FL, passed away April 10, 2017. He was born June 17, 1947, in Niles, MI, to Jack and Virginia (Wishart) Kehoe. Dennis enjoyed tennis and was very proud to be a marathon runner. He adored singing and would sing Amazing Grace to anyone. He even used to sing with a barbershop quartet! Dennis was of the Methodist faith and was a loving father and grandfather. Dennis is survived by his loving children: Melissa English and husband Russell and Chris Kehoe and wife Huyen; grandchildren: Haylie, Emily and Julia English and Madison and Alexander Kehoe; soon-to-be great granddaughter: Isabella; and siblings: Tom Kehoe and wife Carol and Pam Maser and husband Paul; six nieces and nephews; along with a host of loving relatives and friends. KELLY, BRENT E., (GHS ’76) went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 16, 2015, after a nearly four year battle with complications relating to diabetes. As in his professional life, Brent faced his health challenges with courage and a fierce determination to beat the disease. Brent was 56 years old, just one month and eight days shy of his 57th birthday. He is survived by his mother, Muriel Helen Kelly of Holiday, and his loving companion and soulmate of 19 years, Ann Ullery also of Holiday. Brent was an accomplished professional photographer who enjoyed traveling the United States to capture the majesty and beauty that is America. His expertise was digital landscape photography, but he also enjoyed going back to his first love, the darkroom, where he processed many award winning black and white images. Brent also delighted in making people laugh, helping those in need and working on his myriad of hobbies, including his love of music, history and classic muscle cars. Brent was a former member and officer of the Chasco Camera Club and the Hot Wheels Club, both located in New Port Richey. KELLY, LARRY DEAN. Boy on Bike Struck, Killed by Stepfather. A 16-year old sophomore bicycling to school before dawn was struck and killed by his stepfather who said he did not see the boy until it was too late, police said Tuesday. Larry Dean Kelly, of Moon Lake, was dressed in dark clothing and was riding his bike along Moon Lake Road to Gulf High School in New Port Richey when he apparently strayed into the path of his stepfather’s car. The teen was also hit by at least one other car and the confusion that resulted caused another… [Miami Herald, Dec. 14, 1988]

KEOUGH, AUSTIN ROGER, died on Aug. 24, 2019. He was born on March 13, 1998. His mother wrote that he died doing what he loved most, spearfishing.

KESSEL, O’CALLAGHAN, 35, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2005 in his home surrounded by his entire family. He had brain tumors that were discovered on October 20. Cal attended Gulf High school from 1984-1988. Cal was a special person, spreading happiness to all he met. Many knew him for his “infectious” smile. He was a shining star at Gulf High School, walking from table to table in the lunchroom, chatting with everyone. He was also well known for holding the position as “Team Manager” for the soccer team during the years he attended and for several years after, under Coach Barnett. Cal offered nothing but kind words and friendship. He was survived by his parents, five siblings who were all graduates of Gulf High School, five nephews and four nieces. He befriended all, and will be missed greatly.

KILLION, ROBERT C., 56, of Seminole, formerly of New Port Richey, died Friday (Jan. 25, 2002) at the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines. He came to this area as a child from his native Terre Haute, Ind., and moved to Seminole from New Port Richey in 1975. He was a paramedic and emergency medical technician for Pasco County from 1977 to 1985. He was a Magnolia Valley volunteer firefighter and was an ambulance driver. He was a Navy veteran and served on the USS Sagacity and served in the honor guard at Arlington National Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Faedra Waymire, Port Richey; two sons, Robert, Land O’Lakes, and Jason, Atlanta; two stepsisters, Ruby Clemens, Daphne, Ala., and Lolita Bernhard, Clayton, Ind.; a companion, Rebekah Harrell, Seminole; three grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. KNOWLES, GWENDOLYN P. (Dinky), age 98, born June 14, 1915 and passed away September 13, 2013 at Bethany Health Care Center. Survived by son, John H. Daughter of Porter Lamar and Charlie May Pierce, she was born in Elfers, FL and graduated from Gulf High School in 1932 in New Port Richey, FL. She was the remaining family member, having 2 brothers and 3 sisters. She lived in Jacksonville, FL for many years before moving to Nashville. Hobbies included sewing, and was a Miami Dolphin and Willie Nelson fan. She was a member of Lakeshore Methodist Church in Jacksonville. KNOWLES, MELVIN CLAY, SR., aged 88, died peacefully at his home on 25th May (2001), surrounded by his family: Swann, his wife of 58 years, his son, The Rev. Canon Clay Knowles, SSC, of Burgess Hill in England and daughters Mrs. Gayle Davis of Nacogdoches, TX, and Miss Patricia Knowles of Atlanta, GA. He leaves also three sisters, Miss Annie Lou Knowles, Mrs. Marguerite Griffing, and Mrs. Christine Funderburke. He had a fond and abiding interest in his widely scattered, extended family which also includes his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jacqueline Knowles, his son-in-law, Dr. Dudley P. Davis, his grandchildren, Justin and Hilary, Scott and Carl, a great-grandson, Jacob, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Knowles was born on 4th September 1912 in Hudson, FL and attended Gulf High School where he played basketball and captained the schools first football team. He worked in the locality first as a commercial fisherman and then as an accountant with the newly formed W.H. Clark Fruit Co. He moved with the company to Jacksonville in 1938 and continued there until his retirement in 1976. Mr. Knowles was a devoted, longtime member of Riverside Avenue Christian Church, where he had been both a Deacon and an Elder, and had served for many years as Church Treasurer. He was active in the Men of Riverside and was a member of the church choir. He was a member of the Riverside Masonic Lodge 266 (F&AM). A man of great personal warmth, Mr. Knowles will be remembered by the many people whose lives he touched, for his ready and genuine smile, his sweet and gentle disposition and his great and generous heart. The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation for the prayers and practical support so freely given by friends, neighbors and the church family. They are particularly grateful to the staff of St. Vincents Hospital, and to the Violet Team of Northeast Community Hospice for their unstinting care and tireless support throughout Mr. Knowles illness. LAGANO, ALBERT J. “WIMPY,” 86. Albert passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019 in Fruitland Park, FL. He was born on January 24, 1933, in Gainesville, FL to Albert and Mary Lagano. He grew up in Cross city, New Smyrna Beach, and graduated from Gulf High School, New Port Richey in 1950. He attended The University of Florida on a football and baseball scholarship. He was the shortstop on the 1952 SEC Championship team. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. He signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954 and played for the ‘Islanders’. In 1956 he graduated with a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Florida. He then moved to St. Petersburg, FL to work for Rexall Drugs. He married Bonnie Dunlop in 1957 and they raised five children in Largo, FL where he owned Bayshore Drugs for 30 years in Belleair Bluffs. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bonnie; his children, Albert and (Theresa) Lagano of Largo, Mary Lynn and (Joe) Lamoureux of Fruitland Park, Joseph and (Laura) Lagano of Ocala, FL; Paul and (Jinda) Lagano of Orlando. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Margaret Jean Lagano. LANGFORD, LANNY. Officer Lanny Langford (1944 – 1969). Lanny Langford was born in Louisville, Kentucky but moved to Florida at a young age, attending all four years of Gulf High School in New Port Richey. He played football for three of those years and was active in both the band and glee club prior to graduation in 1963. After serving in the Army National Guard and as an officer in the New Port Richey Police Department, he joined the Tarpon Springs Police Department in July of 1969. Officer Langford died from injuries sustained in an on duty traffic accident later that same year.

LaPLANTE, FLORENCE, 75, of New Port Richey, died Friday (April 16, 2004) at Hernando-Pasco Hospice in New Port Richey. She came here in 1964 from her native New Castle, Pa. She was a retired teacher from Gulf High School in New Port Richey. She was a member of the Beacon Square Civic Association and Beth El’Shalom Messianic Center. LASHUA, M. K. “LASH,” 75, of Palm Harbor, formerly of Clearwater, died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in Leominster, Mass., and came to this area in 1936. He graduated in 1942 from Gulf High School, New Port Richey. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from University of Arizona. He lived in Clearwater for more than 35 years and worked 17 years as an accountant for Baker Industries. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Clearwater, Dunedin North Rotary Club, a former member of Belleair Rotary Club and a past president of Clearwater Evening Sertoma Club. He was active in Elks Lodge 2275, Dunedin. Survivors include his wife, Janette; two sons, Kim A., Sarasota, and Randy H., Tallahassee; a daughter, Cheryl Gordon, Tallahassee; three stepdaughters, Becky Rudman, Palm Harbor, Cindy Petelle, Clearwater, and Jody Peters, Steinhatchee; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. LAUTER, MAGIN. Magin Lauter was an 18-year-old mother of three who collected animals in pain. She nurtured litters of starving kittens. She nursed a maimed finch back to flight, feeding it with an eyedropper. She saw wounded turtles at the side of the road and tried to save the eggs. “She used to drag home anything that was a stray,” said Rebecca Christian, her mother. Friday night, riding with a friend down State Road 52 just west of Sugar Creek Boulevard, the teenager from Holiday passed what looked like a hurt owl in the road. It was dark, but Lauter did what she’d done so many times before: She got out to help. That’s when a 1996 Toyota pickup coming down the center lane plowed into her from behind. Paramedics flew her to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, but they couldn’t save her. Her friend, 23- year-old William Merrell of New Port Richey, went with her onto the road. He suffered serious injuries but survived. “She probably didn’t even think twice about it,” Christian said of her daughter’s attempt to rescue the owl. “It just kinda makes me want to shake my head and say, ‘It figures.’ ” Lauter, who left Gulf High School without graduating to start a family in her mid-teens, leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter, Kayla, and 1-year-old twins, a boy, Mason, and a girl, Madison. Until recently, Magin also took care of two dogs, a cat, a hedgehog and a snake. “Magin was a free spirit. She loved animals. She always brought home cats, snakes, squirrels,” said her father, Paul Lauter. “She wanted to rescue them. That was her mission, to rescue them.” When her kids got older, her family said, she wanted to be a nurse. She also planned to marry the father of her kids, Roger McQuaig, 21. McQuaig said he isn’t sure exactly how to break the awful news to the children, but he plans to say their mother died trying to help an owl. “She just cared,” said her brother, Paul Lauter, 23. “She had her hands full. She took on an awful lot for a young lady. In my eyes she gets the utmost respect, to be an 18-year-old raising three babies.” Coupled with Magin Lauter’s maternal qualities, however, was what family and friends describe as a defiant, headstrong streak – the kind of trait that allowed her to stop traffic in the road if it meant saving a wounded animal. “She made her own rules,” her brother said. ”It didn’t matter what anybody thought.” Added her sister, 28-year-old Lona Lauter: “No one could tell Magin what to do. She did it her way. . . . Her heart drug her out of that car into the road, caring for that bird. The owl was already dead, and she didn’t know that.” Speaking from his hospital bed Monday night, Merrell, Lauter’s friend, said he had two broken legs and a broken pelvis. Just before the pickup struck them, he said, another car swerved and barely missed them in the road. He said he tried to push her to safety. “I tried,” he said. “I tried.” The Florida Highway Patrol filed no charges against the driver of the pickup, Daniel Lewis, 51, of Port Richey. Magin Lauter’s family said she never regained consciousness after the accident and died Sunday morning at the hospital. The family said one of her kidneys went to a child. Knowing that, the family added, helps a little bit. It means her death wasn’t pointless. “She was going to save that owl,” Lona Lauter said. “She saved a child instead,” her father said. LAUTERBACH, JOYCE BAILLIE, sadly passed away at the age of 78 in New Port Richey, Fl. on August 8, 2020. Joyce was born in Elfers/New Port Richey on March 24, 1942. She leaves behind two children, Wayne Stiles, wife Kathy and Cyndi Hopper, husband Shawn. Joyce has 5 granddaughters: Dana, Brittany, Katie, Kirsten, and Shawna. She also had 3 grandsons: Glenn, Jason, and Christian; as well as 7 great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her loving husband of 11 years Bob, and her parents Lovert and Ouida Baillie. She also had numerous cousins, who were her closest friends. Joyce grew up and lived in her birth town for pretty much all her life. She graduated from Gulf High School in 1960 and started her family soon after. She became a home health nurse later in life and retired early to take care of her parents. Joyce was a very loving, sweet, and caring woman who loved her family deeply; they were her whole life. She thought of everyone else before herself and spent her life always taking care of others. Her smile and laugh would light up a room! She loved camping, knitting, crocheting and enjoyed spending time with her family and sharing meals. Visitation with the family will be held at Morgan Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, August 15, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m.

LEPLEY, DEBORAH JO, born Sept. 2, 1951, passed July 10, 2020. Dr. Deborah Jo Lepley born in Coshocton, Ohio to Jack and Natalie Lepley passed away quietly surrounded by her partner of 30 years, Barbara Zaleski and family and friends. Deborah was proceeded in death by her parents; brother, Stanley Lepley; and survived by her brother, Lon Lepley. Dr. Lepley was a very accomplished woman. She earned her Bachelor and Master’s from The Ohio State University and received her Doctorate in Visual Arts Education from Penn State University while studying there she converted to Catholicism. After receiving her Doctorate Dr. Lepley enlisted in the U.S. Army where she served our country in the 101st Airborne for four years. After serving Dr. Lepley started her teaching career at North Olmsted, Ohio. Dr. Lepley then accepted a teaching position in the Pasco County School System in New Port Richey Florida. Dr. Lepley started at Ridgewood High School as the art teacher and ESE advisor. Dr. Lepley also received a Fulbright Scholarship where she taught in England at St. Cuthbert’s an all-male Upper school. After returning from England Dr. Lepley entered the assistant principal’s pool and received her first assignment at Ridgewood High School. Dr. Lepley was then assigned a new position as Assistant Principal at Gulf H.S. where she started the International Baccalaureate program. Dr Lepley was then assigned to Sunlake High School where she finished her 30 years in teaching. Deb then started her final career as the owner and operator of the Happy Hills Sheep Farm where she raised Dorper sheep first in Babson Park, Florida then moving the operation to Pierson, Florida. Deb won several awards for the raising and the genetics of her sheep. Deb was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes in Daytona Beach Florida and St John the Baptist in Crescent City, Florida. A celebration of Life mass will be held on August 22 at 1:30 pm at Our Lady of Lourdes. A Military Interment will be held on August 24 at 9:30 am at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery. LITTELL, BARTOW STUBBS. Plano, Texas – Mr. Bartow “Bart” Stubbs Littell, 96, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at his residence in Plano. He was a native of Hudson, Fla. and a longtime resident of Brewton. LITTEL, GEORGE WILLIAM CORWIN, 89, of Tarpon Springs, formerly of Tampa and Aripeka, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at Integrated Health Services of Tarpon Springs. He was born in Tampa and lived in Aripeka until he moved in 1940 to Tarpon Springs. He graduated in 1929 from Gulf High School, New Port Richey, where he was played on the school’s first football team. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He owned and operated a fishing boat Cristalo and was a fisherman and sponge diver. He was a sergeant on the Tarpon Springs Police Department until he was disabled in an accident. He was Baptist and a 32nd degree Mason and past master of Tarpon Masonic Lodge 112. Survivors include three sons, Bill, Tampa, Christopher, Orlando, and Phillip, Homosassa; three brothers, Bartow, Brewton, Ala., and Sidney and Worth, both of Aripeka; two sisters, Edith Wardlaw and Madelyn McGinley, both of Aripeka; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. LLOYD, GARRY EUGENE, 49, passed away on May 9, 2021. Born to Gertrude and the late Gary Lloyd on June 13, 1971, in Belmar, New Jersey. Moved with his family to New Port Richey in 1973. LOCKE, MITTYE P., 99, passed away peacefully at Hernando-Pasco Hospice’s Marliere Care Center in New Port Richey on Feb. 25, 2009, after a short illness. She would have celebrated her 100th birthday April 20. Ms. Locke was the mother of Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Olson. Born in Tupelo, MS, she moved to Pasco County in 1912 and was a teacher and principal for over 50 years. Mittye P. Locke Elementary School in Elfers was named in her honor in 1983. She was a graduate of the Gulf High School Class of 1927 and Florida Southern College in Lakeland. Ms. Locke was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Ladies Oriental Shrine, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and the Parent Teachers Association. An accomplished musician, she served as organist for the First United Methodist Churches of New Port Richey and Tarpon Springs, the First Presbyterian Church of Port Richey, and the Order of the Eastern Star for many years. In addition to her son and his wife, Mary, she is survived by granddaughters Mary Beth Grodszinsky (David); Kelly Rutherford (William); great-grandsons, Keith Childs and Andrew Rutherford; great-granddaughters, Amanda Childs, Alyssa Nystrom, Lilly Grodszinsky, Elizabeth Rutherford, and Brittany Rutherford; great-great-granddaughter Hope Iverson; a sister, Gwendolyn Knowles, Antioch, TN; and a number of nieces and nephews. A retired Albemarle Corp. chemical engineer with more than 30 years of service and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died at 2:29 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at Select Specialty Hospital of Baton Rouge. He was 70, a native of Elfers, Fla., and a U.S. Navy veteran. LOECHELT, JAMES S., 62, of New Port Richey, died Monday (Feb. 6, 1995) at Columbia New Port Richey Hospital. Born in Elfers, he spent most of his life in the area. He was a customer field representative for Florida Power and an Air Force veteran. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, New Port Richey, treasurer of the Baker House Restoration, and a member of the Planning Board for the city of New Port Richey. LOECHELT, PAUL ANDREW, age 48, of Land O’ Lakes, Florida died suddenly Monday evening, February 4, 2019. Born on June 26, 1970 in Waupun, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late James and Joyce (Freckmann) Loechelt. Paul grew up in New Port Richey, Florida and graduated from Gulf High School in 1988. After high school, he attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1993. Eager to serve his country, Paul started his military career in the Army in 1997 and specialized as a Russian linguist. He deployed to Bosnia in 2000 for 6 months and was honorably discharged as a Specialist after serving 3 years and receiving a commission into the US Air Force. During this time, he was the recipient of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and NATO Medal. In September of 2001, Paul was commissioned as an Officer in the Air Force Intelligence Department and served for 4 years on active duty and joined the active reserves until his death. While in the reserves, he was deployed in 2010 for 3 months and served in support of Enduring Freedom. As an Intelligence Officer, he achieved the rank of Major. He also received the honors of the Air Force Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air and Space Campaign Medal and Armed Forced Expeditionary Service Medal. He continued in the intelligence field and worked at Wright-Patterson Air force Base in Ohio and the FBI in Washington, DC. In 2012, he moved to US Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida and worked as an Intelligence Analyst until his death. He received the honor of the Joint Civilian Service Commendation Medal. Paul married Kristina Ashley on Oct 29, 1994, in Ft Myers, Florida. He was a devoted husband and father to his wife and three children. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, James and Joyce Loechelt. Paul is survived by his spouse, Kristina of Land O Lakes, Florida; his children, Samantha, Nathaniel and Gabriel; his brothers, Mark, Scott and Brett. LUIKART, DAVID SR. Decorated Military Veteran David Luikart Dies At 82

NEW PORT RICHEY – David L. Luikart Sr., who owned Roscoe Drugs on Grand Boulevard for decades, was active in the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and was twice decorated for bravery in World War II, died Tuesday at 82.

Luikart was born on May 21, 1925, at the family homestead on what is now named Oelsner Street in New Port Richey.

His parents, Frank and Virgie Luikart, came here in 1913 from Paradise, W.Va., and bought 10 acres for $5, dubbing the street leading to their home as “Paradise Avenue,” according to their grandsons Steven and Phil Luikart.

Steven Luikart, assistant principal at River Ridge High School, now lives on the property with his wife, Nancy.

David Luikart’s childhood memories included riding on the running board of silent film star Gloria Swanson’s limousine. He got his start in the pharmacy business at 13, when he went to work for Roscoe Drugs’ founder Roscoe Henderson.

A 1942 graduate of Gulf High School, the elder Luikart lettered in football, basketball and baseball and was class valedictorian.

Shortly after entering the University of Florida, Luikart joined the Army and won a battlefield promotion to sergeant. He served with the 94th Infantry Division of the 3rd Army under Gen. George S. Patton and participated in four major European campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge.

Luikart was awarded Bronze and Silver Stars for bravery in combat. He seldom talked about the war and never about his exploits, his sons recalled Wednesday.

“He went over to do what he needed to do for his country, and he never complained about it, and he didn’t want to talk about it,” Phil Luikart said.

After the war, the elder Luikart resumed his studies at UF, graduating with a bachelor of science in pharmacy. He also served 12 years with the Army Reserve Medical Service Corps.

Luikart married Arline Drinkard of Buchanan, Va., on Dec. 27, 1946. They had three sons: David Jr., Steve and Phil. She died at 68 on April 15, 1994, 14 years to the day before her husband.

Luikart was a member of First Baptist Church, which his parents helped found, was on the advisory councils for Gulf High School and Marchman Technical Education Center, and was once honored by the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce as Pioneer Citizen of the Year.

He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. But his great passion was for the Elks, with whom he rose from exalted ruler of Lodge 2284 in 1964 to president of the Florida State Elks Association in 1990.

Luikart is survived by his second wife, Catherine, his sons and numerous other grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Elks Lodge at 7201 Congress St. at 6 p.m. April 29. Thomas B. Dobies Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
