Hernando County Schools in 1879-1880

The following was transcribed by Jeff Cannon from Hernando County School Board minutes from September 30, 1879..

Based on names of the trustees, the following schools were likely located in what is now Pasco County: Fort Broome, Willow Oak, Brushy Branch, Sea Island, Prospect, Wesley Chapel, Ft. Dade Seminary, Townsend House, New River, Baillie’s School, Anclote, Langs School, Pine Grove, Surveyors Pond, Spring Valley, Tillis Hammock, and possibly a couple of others.


Brooksville, Fla. Tuesday, September 30. 1879

    The Board met this day pursuant to adjournment.  Present Wm. L. Frierson, Chairman, D.G. Hennis, and S. Stringer, Sec: Board.

    A petition from Spring Valley was presented for consideration of the Board, for the establishment of a public school at that place and petition granted.

    On motion it was ordered that the Public Schools, as now organized, be taught for a term of three months, during the scholastic year of 1879-80, and the paid term be taught without intermission, unless suspended by written consent of trustees, based upon the prevalence of contagious diseases in said school.

    On motion it was ordered that the County Superintendent receive and act on petitions for removal of school houses for short distances.

    The following annual report of J.J. Hale Treasurer of the Board, was submitted, examined, and approved as correct and copy of same filed in this office to wit:
