HISTORY OF HERNANDO COUNTY SCHOOLS

Hernando County Schools in 1877-1878

The following was transcribed by Jeff Cannon from Hernando County School Board minutes from Oct. 1, 1877. At that time Hernando County was much larger than it is today, as it included the area that is now Pasco and Citrus counties. Earlier documents on Hernando County schools were lost in a fire which destroyed the Hernando County Courthouse on Sept. 29, 1877.

The list shows Charlie Apopka, although an early map shows a place called Chalo Apopka.

Based on names of the trustees, these schools were likely located in what is now Pasco County: Fort Broome- Dade City; Willow Oak – Darby; Brushy Branch – near San Antonio; Sea Island – possibly near Wesley Chapel; Prospect – Prospect; Wesley Chapel – Wesley Chapel; Fort Dade Seminary – Dade City; Townsend House – Townsend; New River- west of Zephyrhills; Baillie School – near what is now Elfers; Anclote – Anclote; Lang’s School – near what is now Hudson; Pine Grove – near what is now Loyce.
